As the host country, India has much to prove in the World Cup 2023. The last time the ODI World Cup was held in India, the MS Dhoni-led side lifted the cup at Wankhede Stadium, which means the pressure has already gone a notch up on Rohit Sharma and his men. Can they become the victorious team and win a third ODI World Cup?

Whatever happens in the World Cup, India has several memorable wins under its belt, filling Indian cricket fans with pride.

5 Memorable Matches of Team India in ODI World Cup

India’s first-ever World Cup came against East Africa in 1975. Under Kapil Dev’s leadership, India triumphed in the 1983 World Cup, beating the West Indies in the final to lift the Cup. It was a turning point for the sport in India.

In 1996, India met Pakistan in Bengaluru, where temperatures ran high. And yet, India managed to clinch a win in front of a packed house, which will go down in history as one of the finest victories for India. India’s win over England in the 2003 World Cup, despite scoring just 250 runs, is the fourth memorable win in the list.

Eight years later, India’s win over Australia in the quarterfinal was one of the most intense games. The Indian team prevailed and set up a semi-final clash with arch-rivals Pakistan. Eventually, India went on to win the trophy.

Here’s a brief look at the five memorable matches:

1975 ODI World Cup – India vs East Africa

India met East Africa in the group stage and needed a win to stay alive in the tournament. They made a statement by beating the comparatively weak opposition by ten wickets. East Africa had won the toss and opted to bat first, but the decision backfired. Thanks to some superb bowling by Madan Lal, the batting team was all out for 120.

In reply, India chased down the target with all ten wickets to spare, riding on both openers, who quickly finished the job. It is also India’s first-ever World Cup win.

1983 ODI World Cup – India vs West Indies

West Indies had won the toss and opted to field first, and their bowling was just too good to ignore. Kris Srikkanth was the top scorer with 38 runs, as India were all out for 183. Indian bowling came to the fore. Madan Lal, India’s hero in their maiden ODI World Cup win, reduced the West Indies to 66/5.

In between, skipper Kapil Dev completed a superb running catch to remove Viv Richards, and eventually, the West Indies were all out for 140, losing the match by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal took three wickets each, as cricket’s fortunes in India changed on that day at Lord’s.

1996 ODI World Cup – India vs Pakistan

In a tense quarter-final in Bengaluru, riding on Navjot Sidhu’s 93, India was on course for a respectable total. But in the end, Ajay Jadeja, who scored 45 off 25 balls, gave the innings a final push, which ensured that India posted a challenging score of 287.

Pakistan was cruising towards the target, with Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar giving Indian bowlers no room. But once this stand was broken, Pakistan kept losing timely wickets and was restricted to 248/9. Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble clinched three-wicket hauls.

2003 ODI World Cup – India vs England

On a bouncy Durban pitch, Indian batters were having a good show, with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Yuvraj Singh among the runs. But once the tail was exposed, India lost a flurry of wickets and was restricted to 250/9.

England was expected to chase down the total comfortably, but Ashish Nehra had other plans. The left arm-pacer smothered the England batters, taking 6/23 and helping India claim a crucial 82-run win.

2011 ODI World Cup – India vs Australia

It was the quarter-final, and India was up against the defending champions, Australia, who batted first and were restricted to 260/6 despite a century from Ricky Ponting. Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, and Yuvraj Singh took two wickets each.

Chasing 261, India was left reeling at 187/5, and Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina stepped in. Both shared an unbeaten stand of 74 runs and saw their team home. The win gave India plenty of confidence, and MS Dhoni and Co lifted the title at the end of the tournament.

Concluding Thoughts

These five games are the most memorable wins for India in the ODI World Cup. The reason was the amount of pressure and heat involved. India’s win over East Africa was just an ordinary match, but it was their first-ever ODI World Cup win, while the win against England in the 2003 World Cup came despite India losing momentum in Durban. But the rest of the matches were all knockout games, and the India team showed grit in the heat of the moment to see their team home.
