The Netherlands are gearing up for the fifth ODI World Cup. Though they are still an ICC associate nation, the ‘Men in Orange’ had a few big scalps in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. The Scott Edwards-led side beat West Indies and Zimbabwe and finished runner-up in the ten-team event to seal a place in World Cup 2023.

5 Five Players To Watch Out for Netherlands in World Cup 2023

The Netherlands has a perfect blend of youth as well as experienced players. They will have to play out of their skins since the tournament format is such that they will have to win as many games as possible. The challenge will also be not to lose games with heavy margins, and that will be possible only when these five players fire in unison.

  1. Bas de Leede
  2. Max O’Dowd
  3. Aryan Dutt
  4. Colin Ackermann
  5. Roelof van der Merwe

We look in detail at the five Netherlands players:

Bas de Leede

Bas de Leede, the Netherlands’ Hardik Pandya, is a top-order batsman. Also, he could bowl at a medium pace, coming on as the first change bowler. The 23-year-old has played 30 ODIs, scoring 765 runs in the process. Moreover, he has 24 wickets with a career-best figure of 5/52. De Leede can give the ball some whack with the bat, and with the ball in his hands, he can seam it away from the right-handers.

Max O’Dowd

Max O’Dowd made half-centuries in his first three innings for the Netherlands and hasn’t looked back since. He has 1158 runs in 33 ODI outings, with a highest individual score of 90. In the upcoming ODI World Cup, the Dutch fans will be hoping O’Dowd would score his maiden ODI hundred. The 29-year-old looks a lot like the Marvel cinematic character ‘Thor,’ and it’s no surprise that he plays a lot like the strongman. That’s why he opens the batting so that his team can take full advantage of the initial powerplay overs, where he can go berserk.

Aryan Dutt

Aryan Dutt, whose father hails from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, is new to international cricket. He has the temperament and was called an ‘exciting prospect’ by then-Netherlands coach Ryan Campbell. Dutt can get a lot of turn and bounce on Indian pitches, and alongside Roelof van der Merwe, the 20-year-old can get them crucial breakthroughs. Since his debut in 2021, he has played 25 ODIs, picking up 20 wickets. He has twice removed Pakistan captain Babar Azam in ODIs.

Colin Ackermann

Colin Ackermann hasn’t played many ODIs. However, the 32-year-old has plenty of domestic white-ball experience under his belt. In the recently concluded ODI World Cup warm-up match against Australia, Ackermann scored a fighting 31 off 37 balls as the wickets kept tumbling around him. Born in South Africa, Ackermann left the Proteas land for better opportunities. He landed in England, where he represented Leicestershire. The stint with the Netherlands put him on the international cricket map. Ackermann is reaching his peak and has the biggest stage to show his talent.

Roelof van der Merwe

Roelof van der Merwe, the most senior player in the Netherlands 15-member squad, is a bowling all-rounder. The 38-year-old bowls left-arm spin and has 19 ODI wickets in 16 matches. He debuted with South Africa in 2008 but never made it big in international cricket for the Proteas. Van der Merwe switched his allegiance to the Netherlands in 2015 and has featured in the 2016, 2021, and 2022 T20 World Cups. The veteran cricketer has nothing to prove and will act as a mentor to Aryan Dutt, alongside whom he will bowl most of the overs in the middle phase of the game.

Concluding Thoughts

The Netherlands hasn’t got the ideal preparation for the ODI World Cup. Both their games were truncated by rain, and even against Australia, their batting frailties were exposed. However, the Dutch fans will be hoping that the team will come up with the goods when the curtain goes up in India.
