Hat-tricks are a rare thing, especially in T20 cricket, where batters are after bowlers and look to dominate the proceedings. Talented bowlers find ways to take wickets with their skills and the ability to read the game.

The Big Bash League (BBL) is a tournament where talented Australian and foreign players play fierce cricket. With so many talented bowlers being a part of the BBL, there have been plenty of hat-tricks in the tournament.

All BBL Hat-Tricks

There have been ten BBL hat-tricks so far, the first of which was picked up by Xavier Doherty. Andrew Tye is the only bowler to pick up two BBL hat-tricks. Rashid Khan and Haris Rauf are the two foreign bowlers to take hat-tricks in the BBL.

First Hat-Trick in BBL

The first hat-trick of the BBL was registered by Xavier Doherty of the Hobart Hurricanes against the Sydney Thunder in the 2012-13 season.

Playing against the Sydney Thunder on 23rd December, 2012, Xavier Doherty took a hat-trick to restrict the opposition to only 147 runs, helping his team win the match by 30 runs. His hat-trick consisted wickets of Simon Keen, Ryan Carters, and Cameron Borgas. Xavier Doherty finished his four-over spell with 3/32 against his name.

Players with Multiple Hat-Tricks

Andrew Tye is the only bowler in BBL history to pick up two hat-tricks. Representing the Perth Scorchers, Andrew Tye picked up hat-tricks in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

Andrew Tye Hat-Trick 2016-17

Andrew Tye is a smart T20 bowler, and he showed exactly why against the Brisbane Heat on 11th January, 2017. Batting first, the Perth Scorchers scored 156 runs thanks to a fabulous knock by Michael Klinger.

In reply, the Perth Scorchers started poorly and ended up 27 runs short. Andrew Tye picked up a crucial hat-trick, one that consisted wickets of Jack Wildermuth, Mitchell Swepson, and Mark Steketee. He ended his impressive bowling spell with 4/22 to his name.

Andrew Tye Hat-Trick 2017-18

Andrew Tye was absolutely brilliant with the ball when he took on the Sydney Sixers on 23rd December, 2017. Bowling first, the Perth Scorchers restricted the Sydney Sixers to just 132 runs, mainly due to a superb bowling spell by Andrew Tye. The Perth Scorchers won the match comfortably by six wickets.

Andrew Tye picked up four wickets, a spell in which he managed to pick up a hat-trick. His hat-trick consisted wickets of Sean Abbott, Steve O’Keefe, and Daniel Sams.

Overseas Players with Hat-Trick

Only two overseas players have managed to pick up hat-tricks in the BBL: Rashid Khan and Haris Rauf.

Rashid Khan BBL Hat-Trick

Rashid Khan, the spin master, has one BBL hat-trick against his name. He took this hat-trick against the Sydney Sixers on 8th January, 2020. In what was a brilliant spell, Rashid Khan picked up four wickets for just 22 runs. In this spell, Rashid Khan picked up a hat-trick, which consisted the wickets of James Vince, Jack Edwards, and Jordan. Despite Rashid Khan’s efforts, his team, the Adelaide Strikers, lost the match.

Haris Rauf BBL Hat-Trick

Haris Rauf, a fiery bowler, bowled with great control when he took on the Sydney Thunder on 8th January, 2020. Thanks to a superb hat-trick by Haris Rauf, the Melbourne Stars restricted the Sydney Thunder to only 145 runs and then comfortably won the match by six wickets. Haris Rauf’s hat-trick consisted wickets of Matthew Gilkes, Callum Ferguson, and Daniel Sams.

Other Bowlers to Take Hat-Tricks in BBL

Apart from Xavier Doherty, Andrew Tye, Rashid Khan, and Haris Rauf, there are five other bowlers who have picked hat-tricks in BBL; the following is the list of those bowlers:

There have been ten hat-tricks in BBL so far, with eight of them being picked by Australian bowlers and the remaining two by foreign bowlers. With so many class bowlers being a part of the BBL 2023-24, cricket fans can expect more hat-tricks in the upcoming season.
