Bangladesh has some challenges as they head into the unknown. And this is quite visible in the build-up to the ODI World Cup, as they struggled in the Asia Cup 2023. Apart from Najmul Shanto, the batting unit struggled to get enough on the board. Also, the Tigers skipper Shakib Al Hasan didn’t do justice to his batting qualities in the Asia Cup.

Tamim Iqbal’s return to the squad will be a massive boost as the batting unit struggled for fluency in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Will the batters up their game in the World Cup?

5 Bangladesh Players to Watch Out for in World Cup 2023

Bangladesh has no shortage of quality players. However, we have picked five players who could play a big role for the Asian nation in the upcoming World Cup.

  1. Shakib Al Hasan
  2. Tamim Iqbal
  3. Mushfiqur Rahim
  4. Taskin Ahmed
  5. Mustafizur Rahman

Let us look at in brief the five Bangladesh players: :

Shakib Al Hasan

The Bangladesh skipper in the Asia Cup, Shakib, will lead this team in the  World Cup. A veteran of 240 ODIs, Shakib made his international debut in 2006 and since then has scored more than 7000 runs and taken 300-plus wickets in the 50-over format. He was out of form in the recently concluded Asia Cup, picking up just three wickets. When it comes to batting, he couldn’t up his game when the team needed it most.

In the dead rubber against India, he fought it out with a superb 80-run knock, which, in the end, proved to be the difference as India lost the match by six runs. His biggest strength is that he can hang in and bail his team out with the bat when the chips are down. In India, Shakib is expected to fire with the bat and take wickets with the ball.

Tamim Iqbal

Tamim finally returned to action in the ongoing series against New Zealand. Regarding his participation in the ODI World Cup, he has made it clear that he will play in the tournament. If the opening batter plays, he will be the senior batter in the side.

Having played close to 250 ODIs, Tamim has scored more than 8000 runs with 14 hundreds and 56 fifties. He will likely open the batting, and fans will hope he hangs in there and tries to play as late as the 40th over. If he does so, he can bat Bangladesh into a formidable position.

Mushfiqur Rahim

The wicket-keeper batter is another seasoned campaigner who would bring immense stability to the Bangladesh middle order. Mushfiqur Rahim has over 7300 runs, with eight hundred to his name. In the recently concluded Asia Cup, the 36-year-old struck a half-century against Pakistan in the Super 4s clash.

The upcoming World Cup will likely be his last appearance in the 50-over World Cup, and Mushifqur would be keen to bow out on a high. He is undoubtedly the most important player in the Bangladesh batting order.

Taskin Ahmed

In the four Asia Cup 2023 matches, Taskin, who played in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, accounted for nine wickets. He was one of the best fast bowlers in the tournament. In the Asia Cup, he had two great performances with the ball. The first was against Afghanistan, where he picked up 4/44, and the next was against Sri Lanka, where he grabbed a three-wicket haul.

Taskin’s strength is his height. He extracts sharp bounces from the pitch and can swing the ball both ways, making him dangerous with the new ball. He is a few wickets away from the 100-wicket ODI mark. The right-arm pacer is critical to Bangladesh’s hopes in the World Cup 2023.

Mustafizur Rahman

Nicknamed Fizz, Mustafizur Rahman is excellent with the ball. The 28-year-old can vary his pace at will, bowling those slower-ball leg cutters that had troubled the whole Indian team, which had traveled to Bangladesh in 2015.

He has represented Bangladesh in around 100 ODIs, with over 150 wickets to his name. The left-arm pacer has five five-wicket hauls with career-best figures of 6/43 against India. Mustafizur is another player Bangladesh fans will be pinning their hopes on in the World Cup.

Concluding Thoughts

Bangladesh has struggled in the Asia Cup, picking up just two wins in five games. However, with the return of Tamim and if Shakib, Mushfiqur, Taskin, and Mustafizur can find form, it will definitely inspire the rest of the players in the squad. And Bangladesh fans will be hoping just that.
