New Zealand is one of the most efficient units in ODI cricket. They are one of the ordinary teams in bilateral series, but they consistently punch above their weight in high-pressure tournaments like the ODI World Cup or the ICC Champions Trophy.

It is what exactly happened in the 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 ODI World Cups. The Kiwis now land in India with an excellent record. In 2007 and 2011, they reached the semi-final, while in 2015 and 2019, they reached the finals only to lose.

This time, they start their campaign against the reigning world champion England. The challenge is stiff; can they deliver under pressure? The answer to that question depends on the performance of these top five players.

5 New Zealand Players to Watch Out for in the World Cup 2023

New Zealand has a fantastic 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup. The list includes terrific batters, excellent all-rounders, and ruthless bowlers. Below are the five New Zealand players to watch out for in the World Cup 2023:

  1. Devon Conway
  2. Darryl Mitchell
  3. Tom Latham
  4. Mitchell Santner
  5. Trent Boult

We look in detail at the five New Zealand players:

Devon Conway

Conway’s batting is so pleasing to the eyes! He has all the shots in the armour, especially playing in the ‘V.’ He can drive through the covers and, at the same time, pull or hook in case bowlers try to bounce him. Moreover, stints with the Chennai Super Kings will help him since he has played on these same pitches during IPL 2023.

The left-handed batter, who made his ODI debut in 2021, has played 22 ODIs, scoring 874 runs at an average of 46. He struck a hundred in Cardiff in the recently concluded ODI series against England.

Daryl Mitchell

Mitchell is a vital cog for New Zealand in the ODI World Cup. In the recently concluded England tour, this middle-order batter scored 196 runs in four innings, scoring a century in the first match. The 32-year-old has been batting at four in England, and high chances are that he will keep batting at the same position in India as well.

The all-rounder has good technique against spinners and can bring his back-foot play to the fore while taking on the pacers. With 29 ODIs under his belt, Mitchell has 1025 runs, with four hundreds to his name. Moreover, he also bowls at a medium pace, which makes him an all-round asset for the Kiwis.

Tom Latham

Latham will bat just below Mitchell at five. His job would be to settle down and then bat with the lower-middle order to finish things. The wicketkeeper-batter knows how to play tight on the Indian pitches. He has excellent backfoot play and uses his feet against spinners. On turning pitches in India, Latham can be an asset.

Indian fans haven’t forgotten him for his superb knock against Hardik Pandya and his men in Auckland in November 2022, where his 145 single-handedly won them the match. In 2023, he was among the runs against Pakistan. His scores in the five-match ODI series are as follows: 20, 98, 45, 60, and 59. Clearly, Latham is a dangerman.

Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner has already become a superstar for the Chennai Super Kings in a short period. His job for New Zealand will be twofold: first, to bat with the lower-middle order to finish things; second, he would have to bowl in the middle phase of the innings, where he desperately needs to give New Zealand the breakthroughs.

Since his debut in 2015, Santner has played 94 ODIs, picking up 91 wickets with a career-best figure of 5/50. His recent stats show that he hasn’t done anything extraordinary in the last 12 months, but his IPL experience can be helpful in the World Cup for the Kiwis.

Trent Boult

The Kiwi pacer is perhaps New Zealand’s best bet with the new ball. He can swing it back into right-handers and unleash lethal yorkers at the death. On the recently concluded England tour, he picked up eight wickets in just two matches, making him the top wicket-taker in the series.

While his contemporaries have built larger-than-life images, Boult, a New Zealander, has maintained a quiet profile and is improving daily. With nearly 200 wickets, Boult, who plies his trade with Rajasthan Royals in IPL, will attract much attention at the ODI World Cup 2023.

 Concluding Thoughts

New Zealand will rely on the likes of Conway, Mitchell, Latham, Santner, and Boult in India. These five are proven players who can thrive on the big stage. New Zealand fans will be hoping that they can steer their team to a maiden ODI World Cup Trophy.
